Washing Soda Crystals
A good old fashioned cleaning product, with a whole host of uses. Great for washing down surfaces and especially good at cutting through grease.
Used against slimy drains will save you an expensive call from a specialist drain-cleaning company. Mix with a small amount of very hot water and pour down the sink, or directly into the outside drain to help keep them clear.
Distilled white vinegar
A wonderful traditional remedy used back in the day which is just as good today!
Can be used for removing limescale, but not on plated surfaces or it will remove the plating too. It must be washed off thoroughly after use. Also excellent for cleaning windows, use one part vinegar, nine parts water, and pour into a trigger cleaning spray container. The solution needs to be rubbed off firmly with old newspapers as it can leave smears.
If you have naughty pets, a little vinegar is also good for pet urine on carpets, and it deters pets from returning to the same spot.
Bleach
Try not to over-use bleach. Warm soapy water will often do a very god job. If you add a splash of bleach in your bucket of soapy water it will make some tough jobs easier.
Bicarbonate of soda
A good alterative to detergent if you suffer from allergies or are sensitive to chemicals. It’s great on stainless steel; it’s good for sinks and its kind to the environment.
Add bicarbonate of soda to bleach to form a paste. This is very good at removing soap scum from shower tiles when rubbed on with a nylon pad

Furniture polish
Most furniture only needs to be polished at least once a month – you don’t want your furniture to get polish-bound by overdoing the polish! So as an alternative, use a damp cloth or try mixing live oil with vinegar or salt and lemon juice, three parts salt to one part lemon juice. This works really well on copper and brass. Rinse and buff dry with a soft cloth.
